Plant Description

A decent ‘roadside’ found phlox, with a very sturdy constitution. The top-most stems, pedicels (flower stalks) and buds have a reddish tint to them, which lends a delicate grace to the flowering tops. This soft pigment is also expressed in light bronzing to the clean-cut leaves, which are, by the way, excellent in fending off powdery mildew. ‘Speed Limit 45’ phlox has not only survived but thrived (or is it thriven?) in poor dry soil here at the nursery, and stood out with clean neat form while other phlox in the same row suffered grievously from mildew and drought. It was reportedly found along a roadside in North Carolina in 1992, by keen eyed plantsmen Pierre Brunnerup and Alan Bush, and later introduced to the trade in 2003.  It was named after the road sign it was found growing under! The color is a soft chalky pink, with a soft rosier eye zone. It is also one of the latest to bloom, flowering very well in September here in VT.

I can highly recommend it for tough hotter, sunnier and drier locations, and especially for southern gardens.

Available for sale in spring of 2024. Plants will be dug to order, and shipped ‘bare root’.
