Plant Description

Phlox ‘Brigadier’ is the earliest blooming of the orange phloxes. It is an orangey-salmon, differing from ‘Orange Perfection’ in that it is shorter, of a slightly less intense color and has no white blazing on the petals. Small clear magenta eye. The 3 cm wide florets are prone to bleaching from the sun if grown in very sunny borders, but this condition is alleviated if the plants are sited with afternoon shade. Keep in mind too, that while bleaching might sound bad, there are times when it attracts the eye, as you get a variety of shades on each panicle, a parti-coloring. A British cultivar, and winner of an RHS Award of Garden Merit.
